Michael Gillis has been Chief Clinical Officer at The Cabin Group since 2018 and is primarily based at The Cabin in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. He provides consultations on all aspects of treatment services and ensures that clinical programming is delivered consistently while following – and often exceeding – best clinical practices.
Since joining The Cabin Group, Michael has overseen the introduction of gender-specific villages in response to research that men and women are affected by addiction and trauma in different ways and treatment is more effective in a single-sex environment. He has also placed an increased focus on trauma across all programmes, as over half of those who seek help for addiction also suffer from underlying trauma or PTSD. By treating these co-occurring disorders simultaneously, recovery is proven to be more sustainable.
Michael has 28 years’ experience in the behavioural health industry, having previously worked as Chief Clinical Officer and Chief Operating Officer at Sunspire Health (a US-based private behavioural healthcare organisation with 260+ residential beds). Other roles include Executive Director and Director of Admissions and Marketing at Lifeskills South Florida.
Michael has managed multiple professional teams including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and licensed mental health counsellors. In addition to his professional achievements, Michael has launched and funded projects through Florida’s largest not-for-profit agency that delivered services to the poorest of the poor across countries in the Caribbean basin.
